Penang Adventist Hospital

The Penang Adventist Hospital, or
Hospital Adventist Pulau Pinang, is a not-for-profit hospital founded in
1924 by Dr Earl Gardner. It is located at 465, Burmah Road, 10350 Penang.
The history of the Penang Adventist Hospital hospital goes back to 12
December, 1924, when it first opened at 108 Muntri Street (Lebuh Muntri). At
that time, it was called the Seventh-Day Adventist Mission Clinic. As it
offered free treatment to the poor, the clinic was rarely ever empty. The
Muntri Street premises proved too cram, and so a more ambitious plan way
laid out to construct a sanitorium and hospital in Burmah Road (Jalan
Burma). |
This came into being, in the form
of the Penang Sanitorium and Hospital, completed in late 1931, and receiving
its first patients in early 1932. With the opening of the hospital, the
Muntri Street clinic relocated to 511 Chulia Street (Lebuh Chulia) in 1932
and then again to 422 Chulia Street in 1939.
With World War II, Malaya fell to the Japanese. Six months into Japanese
Occupation, the Penang Sanitorium and Hospital was taken over by the
occupying forces and renamed the Love Hospital. During the war period, the
left wing of the hospital was completed, and was called the "Japanese Wing".
After the war was over, the hospital was renamed Penang Mission Hospital,
and then later on reverted to its original name, Penang Sanitorium and
Hospital, or Rumah Sakit Peranginan dan Rumah Sakit Pulau Pinang. The right
wing of the hospital - nowadays known as the Old Wing - was completed in
1958, a year after Malaya's independence. It enabled the hospital to provide
premium services to paying customers for first-class wards.
Some time in the late 60's, it changed its name to Rumah Sakit Advent, or
Penang Adventist Hospital. This was done to streamline the names of over
four hundred Adventist hospitals and clinics worldwide. The Penang Adventist
Hospital expanded again in the late 1990 with the completion of a new
five-storey annex housing a five-theatre operating suite, ten Intensive Care
units, maternity suites and other tertiary medical facilities. The number of
beds almost doubled, from 120 to 212.
Seventh-Day Adventist worship services are conducted at the hospital on
Saturdays at 9:00 am at the Auditorium, Adventist College of Nursing. The
services are in Malay as well as in English.

Getting There
Penang Adventist Hospital is located on Jalan Burma opposite Midlands One
Stop Shopping Centre. You can take Rapid Penang Bus 101, 104 and 304 to
reach it. Bus stop is in short distance near the shopping centre.
