Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital

Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital

Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital is one of the leading cancer hospitals in the country. It is located in the Fettes Park area of Tanjung Bungah, at the end of Jalan Bulan.

The Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital was established by the Roman Catholic nuns from the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood.

The inspiration to found the hospital came way back in 1963, when the late Bishop Francis Chan, the first Catholic Bishop of Penang was suffering from terminal cancer, and was looked after by the French Sisters of the Foreign Mission, also called the Grey Sisters.

Bishop Francis was so touched by the commitment and passion of the nuns that he invited them to start a home to look after cancer patients.

When the French Sisters of the Foreign Mission withdrew in 1970, Bishop Gregory Yong - successor to Bishop Francis - invited the Sister of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood to found a cancer hospital. Construction, next to the College General, began in 1974, and the Mount Miriam Hospital was declared open by Bishop Gregory on 21 February 1976.
